What's the difference between a Dietitian and a Nutritionist?
What is a dietitian?
-
Masters Degree or Bachelors in Dietetics
Dietitian collegiate coursework includes clinical experience, lifecycle, community, food services, biochemistry, biology, & more.
-
1 Year Dietetic Internship
Mandatory 1,200 hours of supervised practice in various nutritional settings providing mandatory on-site clinical experience.
-
Pass the National Exam
Administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration, registered dietitians (RD) must pass this exam. Some states often require RDs to obtain a license after passing.
-
75 Hours of Continuing Education
RD's are required to obtain seventy-five(75) hours of continuing education credits to maintain their RD status.
What is a Nutritionist?
-
No Formal Accreditation
Widely used, the term "nutritionists" is not accredited and is not protected by any governing body.
-
No Mandated Requirements
The government doesn't regulate this term and almost anyone can self-proclaim themselves as a "nutritionist" - proceed with caution.
-
Cannot Provide Medical Nutrition Therapy
While some nutritionists can work in food service industries, they do not have the training to counsel patients on dietary treatment of diseases. Dietitians do.
-
Little to No Education
Nutritionists may have done classes, coursework, or they could be self-designated and add the title "Nutritionist" to their name.
